Welcome back to The nerd shelf!
Today's post is going to be my review of the season two premiere of The good doctor. This was one of my favorite new shows last year so I was so excited for this premiere.
If you haven't seen The good doctor the series is about Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, as he moves to San Jose, California to work at the hospital where his mentor and father figure works.
It's an amazing medical drama that will probably make you cry (if you're as emotional as me) in every episode. It just pulls on your heart strings.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
So the premiere episode of season two is actually written by Freddie Highmore who plays Shaun. It's the first episode he has written he did an amazing job.
Season one left us on a cliffhanger. Shaun and Glassman (Richard Schiff) go to Andrews (Hill Harper) office to tell him the mistake that Shaun did. We're left not knowing what's going to happen to Shaun and if Andrews will take over as president.
Cut to this season, Andrews has taken over as president and he didn't fire Shaun, thank god, cause there wouldn't be a show then. He has performance reviews with all of the residents. He tells Claire (Antonia Thomas) that she needs to be more assertive, Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) that she needs to be less egotistical and more of a team player and in Shaun's performance review, Andrews tells him that Shaun that he needs to work on his communication skills. Jared (Chuku Modu) didn't go to his because he thought it would be unnecessary because it's his last day. They all have something to prove and they want to impress Andrews or prove him wrong.
Claire comes up with an idea to help Dr. Melendezs (Nicholas Gonzalez) case. They are doing an operation where they are adding another heart to a woman's chest to help the other heart out. Now what the fuck. Is this an actual thing? Do they actually do this? I've never heard of this, and I've watched Grey's Anatomy for 13 fucking years. Anyways they find a complication and Melendez wants to cancel the surgery. He seems to have a problem with Andrews and I don't really know why. I don't think he liked Glassman enough to feel like he has to have his back, but I could be wrong. It seems like he doesn't like that Andrews wants him to do this even though it's dangerous for publicity. And Melendez isn't about that. But Claire and Morgan come up with an idea that could work, and when Claire tries to give them all credit Morgan tells Andrews that it was all Claire's idea. I have such a fucking hard time with Morgan. She is so infuriating to me. I feel like every "nice" thing she does for someone is done with some weird motivation behind it. She never does things just to be nice. She does those nice things if it will help her out. And she did the same thing in this episode. She didn't give Claire the credit just out of pure niceness, no she did it because Andrews told her to be more of a team player and it would make her look good. Melendez still doesn't want to do the surgery so Aoki (Tamlyn Tomita) gives Andrews some advice. They have this nice conversation about Glassman (Richard Schiff). She gives Glassman some credit, he was the president of the hospital for a long time, he must have done something right. She tells Andrews that he was a manipulator, he might have seemed soft, but he wasn't. I liked this. It showed that not everyone on the board hated Glassman, or if they didn't like him they could at least see that he was good at what he was doing.
Andrews decides to basically manipulate Melendez into wanting to do the surgery. Again when Andrews comes into Melendez's office I could just see how much Melendez dislikes him. But I can't remember him ever really liking Glassman. I'm so confused! Can anyone remind me why, please?
They do the surgery and it works, and when it's time to close Claire takes the opportunity to do it right before Morgan was going to. I liked this moment, she needs to be a little bit more aggressive, and especially when she's around Morgan or she will just be stepped on.
Shaun and Jared are running a mobile clinic that was Glassman's project. Shaun tries this whole episode to communicate more with patients. It doesn't really go well until they go back and try to find the homeless man. My favorite scene out of the whole episode is probably that scene. Shaun just opens up to this man who is kind of aggressive to convince him that they can help. He tells him that he has a neurological issue that he will never be able to fix but they can fix his. I loved how proud Jared looked in that moment. They helped someone become themselves after years of living on the streets because of a tumor. And they helped him reunite with his wife and daughter. This show fucking knows how to pull on your heartstrings. I loved how Jared stood up for Shaun to Andrews. I'm just sad that he won't be there anymore. I loved the scene between Jared and Shaun when they kind of say goodbye. It's so beautiful. I fell like they have developed this sibling relationship over the last season. I especially felt that when Jared says thank you to Shaun. It feels like he's thanking him for traching him how to not judge people just for being different. It feels like he's thanking him for being able to get to know him. It's so beautiful. And then Shaun thanks him. And oh my god the end scene with Jared and Claire. Fuck me that was emotional. I cried so hard. Jared looks so sad to go, because obviously if it was up to him he wouldn't leave. And Claire telling him she thinks she made a mistake and that she wants him to stay. And he just says no. And oh, when he said that one day he thinks that they'll both be very happy I lost it. It was such a beautiful goodbye.
The whole episode he's trying to ignore that Glassman maybe needs some company. Glassman is in a waiting room the whole episode waiting to do some tests. Dr. Lim (Christina Chang) wants to do the tests all over again because she's in charge now. He's so frustrated but goes along with it anyways. Shaun tells Jared that he shouldn't be alone on his last day and Jared doesn't like that. He says that his life will go on, just in another city, but Glassman is fighting for his life and needs support. What it basically boils down to is that Shaun doesn't want to be around Glassman to protect himself. It helps him to distance himself because then he won't get as hurt if it goes bad. But Jared points out that it might be better for Shaun but not for Glassman. I loved that because I think everyone at some point in their life will have that moment with someone they love. Glassman has been Shaun's father figure and of course, Shaun doesn't want to see him suffer in any way. They had a rough time last season but in the end, they just want what's best for each other. The last scene with them was my another one of my favorite scenes. Glassman is just sitting in the cafeteria and Shaun comes to sit down with him. Glassman basically tells Shaun that he can go wherever he wants, that he doesn't have to stay there because of him. He says that he will have a long journey in front of him and that he will have to take it alone and Shaun just says I know and I'm going with you. I'm crying just writing this because it punched me so hard in the heart. It's so beautiful. I feel like Glassman is letting his pride get in the way of him letting other people help him through this. And this scene, those words broke those walls down. I loved it.
Now the last scene is Shaun coming home and finding Lea (Paige Spara) in front of his door with all of her stuff. I was so excited about this. I loved her last season and I really love their love story. I can't fucking wait to see what this season holds. This premiere was so strong.
